+ 23- 21-09-2007 - New Procedure for British Visas
    All Algerian nationals are advised that, from the 19th of September, 2007, the British Embassy in Algiers has introduced the use of biometric data in the form of scanned fingerprints and digital photos of those persons applying for entry visas to the United Kingdom. This new system does not only concern Algeria, as it is already in force in several countries and will be rolled out to all British Embassies and Consulates abroad by 2008.

    Visa applications must henceforward be submitted to the Embassy’s new commercial partner, Computer Science Corporation, instead of the Worldwide Trading Group agency. The Visa Application Centre located at 71, rue Mohamed Belkacemi, El Madania, (Oued Kniss) BP 103, Alger Gare, 16075 (1st floor of the Ericsson Building) has been designated as the collection centre for the biometric data of visa applicants. The offices of this Centre are open from 8:00a.m. to 3p.m., Sunday to Thursday.

    In expectation of the return to Algiers from Tunisia of the visa services, certain types of visas will be processed in Algiers. Information as to the type of visa in question as well as the days on which applications can be submitted, will be made public in the very near future.

+ 22- 28-07-2007 - International jamboree: 225 Algerian "good ambassadors" in London
    Youth and Sports Minister Hachemi Djiar on Thursday called on 225 scouts due to partake in an international jamboree in London to seize this opportunity to bring into light Algeria's wealth in various fields. Speaking before the scouts on the eve of their departure for the United Kingdom, Djiar reminded them of the need for being Algeria's "good ambassadors" during this international event and to see to putting forward "their talents and abilities through which they aspire to secure a promising future."

+ 21- 23/06/07- Special meeting in London: New investment opportunities in Algeria on the agenda
    New investment opportunities in Algeria will be at the heart of a special meeting to be initiated by the Arab-British Export Club on 3 July 2007 in London. The meeting, which will be mainly on "new opportunities in Algeria", enables to review the different investment opportunities in Algeria, outside the traditional attractive Energy sector.

    The Presidency of the Republic announced Thursday evening in a release the resignation of the government and the nomination of ministers assigned to dispatch the daily business.

    This is the full text of the Presidency of the Republic's release:

    "In application of the Constitution, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, Head of the Government, presents to Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the Republic, the resignation of his government.

    "The President of the Republic accepted this resignation and assigned Head of the Government and the members of the government to dispatch the daily business affairs."
    "He assigned, besides, Abdelaziz Belkhadem to take the office of acting Minister of National Education."

+ 17- 28/05/07- British bank HSBC embarks on Algeria
    The Council of Money and Credit (CMC) just gave the authorization to the British Bank HSBC to embark in Algeria, bringing to thirteen the number of foreign banks activating in the country. This bank's capital, amounted at in the beginning at AD2.5 billion, will be brought to AD3.67 billion in this third year of its active presence in the Algerian market, the CMC stressed. HSBC Bank (Hong Kong and Shangai Banking), a leading bank in Great Britain, is also a leading bank in all Europe with market capitalization set at €60 billion far ahead the Italian and Italian banks.

+ 16- Zerhouni calls for the revision of law governing political parties
    Algiers- Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni declared on Friday here that "we must revise" the law governing the political parties, to prevent the deficiencies recorded during voting operations. "The law governing parties or the political associations contributes to the scattering of the political organizations," Zerhouni pointed out, during a news conference where he announced the results of the legislative elections, asserting that "it is of the duty of the new People's National Assembly (Parliament), to make proposals likely to adapt this law with the new realities in Algeria."

    Algiers- No political party has got the majority at the People's National Assembly (Parliament) in the legislative polls, which took place on Thursday. According to the preliminary results announced on Friday by Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni, the National Liberation Front Party (FLN) leads with 136 seats, but without obtaining the majority of the People National Assembly (Parliament)'s 389 seats set to vote.

    British frigate "HMS Northumberland" landed on Sunday in Algiers port for a three-day stopover, as part of the reinforcement of bilateral military cooperation between the Algerian and British navies.

    The recent amendments of the Code of The Algerian Nationality, recognises the Algerian Nationality to a child born from an Algerian mother regardless of the nationality of the father. As a consequence of this new legislation, the child is entitled to Algerian documents including Passport and ID Card.

+ 9: 18/02/07 British parliamentarians call for consolidating Algerian-British relations
    A representative of the Labour Party and another from the Liberal Democrats have pleaded for the reinforcement of the relations between the United Kingdom and Algeria. Both have made this plea in two separate articles released in the latest issue of the quarterly of the Inter-parliamentary Union Review in the wake of a visit to Algeria as part of this Union.

    An Algerian delegation led by President of the High Islamic Council (HCI), Cheikh Bouamrane, will start as from Monday (05/03/07) a four-day visit to the United Kingdom.     Algiers - Algeria "does not accept the installation of military bases on its territory whatever country they belong to," Foreign Minister Mohammed Bedjaoui asserted Saturday. "Algeria does not accept the installation on its territory of any military bases whatever country they belong to," Bedjaoui underlined in national radio's channel III by adding "no country has made a request in this regard to the Algerian authorities."

+ 3: 31/03/07- Algeria signs Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
    Algeria has signed, Friday at the New-York-headquartered United Nations, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol on Communications, adopted by the General Assembly last December, Algeria's permanent mission to the UN has reported. Under the Convention, which was signed by Algeria's ambassador to the UN Youcef Yousfi, countries must develop and carry out policies for securing the rights of persons with disabilities, and abolish laws, regulations, customs and practices that constitute discrimination.

    The national competences living abroad, who held a meeting in Algeria from 16 to 18 April, have decided to create a committee of coordination for "better get them support and contribute to develop an economy of knowledge" in the country. This body will be based in Algeria with a representation abroad, a release of the National Foundation for health promotion and research development (FOREM) and the scientific association of Ibn Badis (IBScientific), organizers of the meeting.
